Government urged to cut energy bills

The government has been urged by a Scottish MP to cut the costs of energy for low-income families and pensioners.

Mike Weir, who is the MP for Angus and the Scottish National Party's (SNP's) energy spokesperson, has stated that energy providers must be forced to reconsider the price of their tariffs in the coming months.

The BBC reports that he added that action was specifically needed now as many companies are predicting price hikes in the New Year.

He said: "It is an utter scandal that, in an energy rich nation like Scotland, poorer families and pensioners face a bleak new year wondering how they are going to afford to heat their homes.

"It is simply not acceptable for Gordon Brown's government to hide behind the excuse that consumers can switch suppliers to get better deals."

Adam Scorer, the director of campaigns for UK watchdog energywatch, recently stated that high energy prices are "the wrecking ball" damaging the government's efforts to tackle fuel poverty.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18407630-ADNFCR
